Venice, aka the “City by the Gulf”, is located directly on the Gulf of Mexico and just south of Sarasota. With a population of approximately 21,000, Venice is a smaller town than nearby cities. Venice is one of the few cities on Florida’s west coast that is not separated by a barrier island. In 1963, construction of the Intracoastal Waterway made an Island of the Venice municipal and commercial district which helped maintain the growth that continues today. In order to preserve the original character of Venice, the city created the Architectural Review Board and Historic Venice District to ensure that any new construction or modification of buildings would continue to conform to the Italian Renaissance style of the city’s heritage. Venice has plenty of award winning golf courses to choose from or if you prefer to relax, Venice Island offers a quaint downtown area. Venice Avenue you will find lined with beautiful oak trees and palms, shady parks, boutique shops, cafes and local restaurants as well as our own Award Winning Venice Theatre. During fall and spring Venice hosts a Blues Festival, Fashion Show, Brew Bash, outdoor music in Centennial park Gazebo, craft fairs and Wine Tastings. If you collect antiques you will not want to miss the shops on Miami Avenue. With over seven miles of white sandy beaches you can bask in the sun or enjoy dining by sunset, fishing at the Jetties, take a stroll with your pet along Brohard Paw Park or walk along Casperson Beach and search for prehistoric Shark’s Teeth which has earned Venice the title of “Shark’s Tooth Capitol of the World.” Recently Legacy Trail was completed to offer over 10 miles of trails between Venice to Sarasota. The trails pass by waterways and includes rest areas, benches and restrooms along the way. |
